In 2010, VisitBritian forecast that over the next ten years tourism would be one of the UK’s best performing sectors. In that year, the sector was the UK’s fifth largest industry, worth £115 billion and employing around 2.6 million people.
The research carried out by Deloitte and Oxford Economics indicated that tourism could be the countries fastest growing sector over the next decade with the value added contribution to the economy growing at 3.5 % per annum and generating 250,000 more jobs.
If this were correct, tourism would show faster growth than more recognised industries such as manufacturing, utilities, retailing and communications.
Around 30m international tourists visit the UK a year, ranking it the sixth most popular destination by visitors – behind France, USA, Spain, China and Italy. While here its estimated that they spend around £16bn, making tourism Britain's third biggest earner of foreign exchange.
